How does it work?
There are many types of spinal adjustments used by practitioners worldwide. Some use mobilization with impulse (spinal manipulation), while others use more gentle techniques called mobilization with out impulse (spinal mobilization). Most procedures are done on a padded, adjustable table. Parts of the table can be dropped as an adjustment is done, adding different forces to the movement.- Spinal manipulation is when the practitioner uses their hands to apply a controlled, sudden force to a specific joint. Patients often hear popping noises but its not necessary, like when you crack your knuckles.
- Spinal mobilization is when practitioners use less forceful thrusts or graded glides and more stretching. In mobilizations, the practitioner is not bringing through a high-velocity passive range of motion.
Note from the Cleveland Clinic
Spinal Manipulation/adjustments might be right for you if you experience pain and want an alternative form of treatment. Most people will feel immediate relief after a chiropractic adjustment, while others could experience temporary minor pain after treatment. If you’re unsure if seeking spinal manipulation/adjustment care is right for you, talk with your primary care provider about your symptoms and concerns.
Current Research
- For adolescents with chronic Low Back Pain, spinal manipulation combined with exercise was more effective than exercise alone over a one-year period.
- One session of thoracic manipulation resulted in improvements in pain, disability, cervical ROM, and deep neck flexor endurance in patients with cervical radiculopathy
- Immediately following a single manipulation to acute neck pain patients there is less pain intensity and a greater range of motion when spinal manipulative therapy is applied to the side of neck pain versus manipulation on the side opposite the pain or to a placebo group.
- Spinal manipulation improves the results of physiotherapy over a period of 3 months for patients with subacute or chronic lumbar radiculopathy.
